"If you talk to a (person) in a language they understand, that goes to their head. If you talk to them in their own language, that goes to their heart."

-Nelson Mandela

Research shows that children are most able to learn language from birth to age 10. Learning the words, rhythms, and BEAUTY of a language is completely natural to the young child. Research also shows that learning a second language before the age of five boosts problem-solving skills, critical thinking, memory, concentration and listening skills. Learning a second language also teaches empathy and exposes a child to the spirit of another culture, thus setting them up for a lifetime of  heart-centered curiosity and cross-cultural exploration.

At Casa Colibri, Spanish exposure will happen throughout the day through song, finger play, story and active Spanish lessons that are taught entirely in Spanish. We will also use basic cues and phrases in Spanish that will be repeated throughout the day until they are as natural as their English equivalents.  In addition to learning the words that make up the Spanish language, children will be exposed to the spirit of the Spanish speaking world through poetry, music, cooking, cultural stories, and celebrations.  Learning Spanish isn’t just about learning words, it is about understanding a new and beautiful way of being, seeing, and understanding the world.

For children who already speak Spanish, they will have the same opportunity to celebrate the beauty of their own language, while also strengthening their English through socialization with their peers.

Children learning together

Do you know what a foreign accent is? It’s a sign of bravery.
